Best Schools in Bromley 2026

For most families, finding the right school isn’t just a priority — it’s often the single biggest factor in deciding where to buy. The good news if you’re searching for property in Beckenham, Bromley or Penge is that the London Borough of Bromley is exceptionally well-served when it comes to education. With 50 Ofsted Outstanding schools across the borough and GCSE results consistently above the national average, it’s one of the strongest areas for state education in Greater London.

This guide covers the best primary and secondary schools across the BR postcodes — what makes each one stand out, where they’re located, and what families should know before committing to a particular street or area.

Why Schools Matter So Much in the Property Market

It’s no secret that good schools and good property prices tend to go hand in hand. Streets within the catchment area of a highly-rated primary or secondary school consistently attract more buyer interest — and higher prices — than equivalent streets just outside. In competitive catchments like those feeding Harris Academy Beckenham or Balgowan Primary School, the difference of a single street can mean the difference between securing a place and missing out entirely.

As local agents who sell and let homes across Beckenham, Bromley and the surrounding areas, we see this play out regularly. Knowing your catchments before you commit to a property isn’t just good parenting — it’s good property strategy too.

Outstanding Secondary Schools in the Bromley Borough

St Olave’s Grammar School — Orpington (BR6)

By almost any measure, St Olave’s is the flagship secondary school in the Bromley borough. Founded by royal charter in 1571 and rated Outstanding by Ofsted, it is consistently ranked among the very top state schools in the country. In 2025, an extraordinary 89.5% of GCSE grades were awarded at grades 9–7 (A*–A), with 47% of all grades at grade 9. At A-level, 95.1% of grades were at A*–B.

Places are fiercely competitive. Each year, more than 1,400 boys apply for approximately 130 Year 7 places through a two-stage entrance process. Entry to the sixth form — open to both boys and girls — attracted 1,176 applications in 2025 alone. There is no catchment area; selection is based entirely on entrance test performance.

For families with academically able boys, living within easy reach of Orpington is a genuine consideration — and it influences demand for family homes in parts of Beckenham, Petts Wood and Chislehurst accordingly.

Type: State selective grammar (boys, co-ed sixth form) | Ages: 11–18 | Ofsted: Outstanding

Newstead Wood School — Orpington (BR6)

Newstead Wood is the borough’s outstanding selective grammar school for girls, rated Outstanding by Ofsted at its most recent inspection in February 2022 — achieving the top grade in every single category including quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership, and sixth form provision. The school’s GCSE results place it in the top 1% nationally for attainment, with 100% of pupils achieving a grade 5 or above in English.

Notable alumnae include Olympic sprinter Dina Asher-Smith and actress Gemma Chan. The school draws from a catchment of approximately nine miles, selecting on verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Boys have been admitted to the sixth form since 2012.

Type: State selective grammar (girls, co-ed sixth form) | Ages: 11–18 | Ofsted: Outstanding

Harris Academy Beckenham — Beckenham (BR3)

For families buying in Beckenham itself, Harris Academy Beckenham is the standout secondary option. Rated Outstanding by Ofsted and consistently ranked among the top secondary schools in London, it places in the top 60 of nearly 500 London secondary schools. Unlike St Olave’s and Newstead Wood, Harris Academy Beckenham is non-selective — places are allocated on distance and, for some criteria, looked-after children.

This makes catchment proximity particularly important. Families buying on streets within walking distance of the school often find that their children are well-placed for a place, while those slightly further afield may be less certain. We’d always recommend checking the most recent admissions data from the London Borough of Bromley before assuming a given address falls within the catchment.

Type: Non-selective academy | Ages: 11–18 | Ofsted: Outstanding

Hayes School — Hayes (BR2)

Hayes School is a co-educational, non-selective Outstanding secondary school located in the Hayes area of Bromley, making it particularly relevant for families buying in BR2. It places strong emphasis on personal development alongside academic results, and benefits from a stable, well-regarded leadership team. Consistently popular with families in the Hayes, Bromley and Shortlands areas.

Type: Non-selective | Ages: 11–18 | Ofsted: Outstanding

Harris Girls’ Academy Bromley — Bromley (BR3)

Located in the BR3 postcode, Harris Girls’ Academy Bromley is a non-selective Outstanding academy serving girls aged 11–18. It’s part of the well-established Harris Federation and offers a strong academic programme alongside a broad range of extracurricular activities.

Type: Non-selective academy (girls) | Ages: 11–18 | Ofsted: Outstanding

Outstanding Primary Schools in the Bromley Borough

Balgowan Primary School — Beckenham (BR3)

For families buying in Beckenham, Balgowan is perhaps the most sought-after primary address in the area. In April 2025, the school received an Outstanding rating in every single category at Ofsted inspection — a remarkable achievement that cements its position as one of the best primary schools in the borough. Located close to Beckenham town centre, the school is heavily oversubscribed and demand for homes within its catchment area remains consistently strong.

Type: State primary | Ages: 4–11 | Ofsted: Outstanding (April 2025, all categories)

Harris Primary Academy Beckenham — Beckenham (BR3)

Also rated Outstanding and located within Beckenham, Harris Primary Academy Beckenham is another strong option for families in the BR3 area. Its Outstanding rating, coupled with proximity to Beckenham’s amenities and transport links, makes it a real draw for families making their first purchase in the area.

Type: Academy primary | Ages: 4–11 | Ofsted: Outstanding

Harris Primary Academy Shortlands — Shortlands (BR2)

Serving the Shortlands area, this Outstanding Harris Federation primary school is popular with families in BR2. Its strong academic results and well-regarded leadership team make it a consistent choice for parents in the Shortlands, Bromley and Beckenham borders area.

Type: Academy primary | Ages: 4–11 | Ofsted: Outstanding

Burnt Ash Primary School — Bromley (BR1)

Consistently ranked as one of the top primary schools in the borough, Burnt Ash Primary is Outstanding-rated and benefits from a strong student-to-teacher ratio of 16:1. It’s located in the Bromley town centre area, making it relevant for families buying in the BR1 postcode.

Type: State primary | Ages: 4–11 | Ofsted: Outstanding

Crofton Junior School — Orpington (BR6)

Rated Outstanding by Ofsted, Crofton Junior is one of the most respected junior schools in the Orpington area. It’s a regular feeder school for both Newstead Wood School and St Olave’s, making it a notable consideration for families with an eye on selective secondary education further down the line.

Type: State junior school | Ages: 7–11 | Ofsted: Outstanding

St James’ Roman Catholic Primary School — Petts Wood (BR5)

An Outstanding Catholic primary school serving the Petts Wood and Orpington areas, St James’ combines strong academic outcomes with a values-led ethos. It’s one of the more popular faith schools in the borough and is regularly oversubscribed.

Type: Catholic state primary | Ages: 4–11 | Ofsted: Outstanding

How the Bromley Borough Compares

The strength of the Bromley school system isn’t just anecdotal. Of the 28,874 primary-age pupils in the borough, Bromley schools outperform the England average on Key Stage 2 results by a significant margin — with 13.54% of pupils achieving a strong pass in reading, writing and maths combined, versus the England average of 7.42%. At GCSE level, 37.48% of Bromley pupils achieved grade 5 or above in both English and maths, compared to a national average of 30.02%.

For parents choosing between South London boroughs, these figures matter. Bromley is consistently one of the best-performing borough councils in London for state education outcomes.

What This Means When You’re Buying

A few practical points to keep in mind when school catchments are part of your property search:

Always check current catchment data directly. Catchment areas shift year on year depending on applications and the distance cut-off for that cohort. The London Borough of Bromley publishes annual admissions data at bromley.gov.uk — this is the authoritative source, not third-party websites.

Distance is usually measured from the front door. Most non-selective schools in Bromley allocate places by straight-line distance from the school to the home address. Being one or two streets closer than you think can make a genuine difference.

Grammar school applications are separate. For St Olave’s and Newstead Wood, there is no catchment — entry is purely based on entrance test results. Proximity to the school is not a factor in admissions, though it may influence day-to-day practicalities.

Think beyond Year 7. If sixth form provision is important, both St Olave’s and Newstead Wood offer outstanding co-educational sixth forms, and their A-level results are among the strongest of any state schools in the country.
